Because each person has different issues and goals for therapy, therapy sessions are unique and catered to each individual and their specific goals. It's different for everyone. The reality is, sometimes it's easier to talk to a stranger than to relatives or friends, because they aren't clouded with judgement that organically comes from loved ones. It's an opportunity to look at your problems in a different way with someone who'll respect you and your opinions, without the bias that comes along within your interpersonal relationships.
This is a great question, and a very common one. The overall theme I've noticed throughout my career, is people want to feel better in some way. Depending on what brings you into your own therapy journey, therapy can help you in many different ways. Some examples are being able to learn how to cope with problems and challenges going on in your life, the opportunity to learn new skills to manage stress, deal with your feelings, emotions and understand yourself better. Therapy can also help you explore thoughts, experiences and feelings that you might not feel comfortable sharing with others.
The first appointment is an opportunity for you to meet me, feel comfortable, begin identifying the reason(s) that led you to start therapy, and formulate goals you wish to accomplish. Once that is determined, I can help you decide which method(s) would be most effective for you to meet your goals. I work collaboratively with all of my client's and value your input. You know yourself best!
Finding the right therapist is crucial for your healing journey—therapy is never one-size-fits-all. That's why I offer a complimentary 20-minute phone consultation before we begin working together. During this call, we'll discuss what brings you to therapy, address any questions you might have about the process or my practice, and determine if we're a good fit in working together.
If we both feel it's a good fit and your needs align with my areas of expertise and therapeutic approach, we'll schedule your first full appointment, typically within a week.
This initial conversation helps ensure you receive the most effective support for your specific situation and sets the foundation for a successful therapy journey.
